Hiring for home improvement work
Most home improvement disputes come from a vague quote. Get the scope, materials and timeline in writing before any work or deposit.
What to check
- Licensing and insurance for the type of work
- Photos or addresses of recent similar jobs
- A written, itemised quote rather than a single figure
- Who handles permits and waste removal
Questions to ask
- What could make the price go up once you start?
- How much deposit do you need, and when is the rest due?
- What guarantee do you give on the work?
