Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, speaking 150. The score is the Flesch reading-ease formula with an estimated syllable count, so treat it as a guide. Your text stays in your browser.
Short sentences keep readers. Long ones lose them halfway.
People skim web pages. Text that scores 60 or more on the Flesch scale is read by more people and to the end, and pages that answer clearly tend to do better in search and AI answers too.
- How many words is a 5-minute read?
- About 1,200 words. Most adults read web text at around 238 words a minute, so 500 words take about 2 minutes and 1,000 words just over 4.
- What is a good readability score?
- On the Flesch reading-ease scale, 60–70 is plain English that most people read easily. Websites, emails and product pages do well at 60 or above; legal and academic writing often scores under 30.
- How is the readability score worked out?
- Flesch reading ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words per sentence) − 84.6 × (syllables per word). Shorter sentences and shorter words raise the score. Syllables are estimated, so treat it as a guide.
- Does it count Urdu, Hindi or Arabic text?
- Yes, word and character counts work in any language. The readability score is built for English, so it only shows for mostly-English text.
- Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
- No. Everything is counted in your browser and disappears when you close the page.
