A sitemap does not rank you. It makes sure Google finds you.
Google discovers most pages through links, but a sitemap lists the pages you want found, including new ones nothing links to yet. Keep it to real, indexable pages: no redirects, no error pages, no duplicates.
- Do I need a sitemap?
- Small sites with good internal links are found without one, but a sitemap helps new sites, large sites and pages with few links pointing to them. It costs nothing and Search Console reports on it.
- What should be in my sitemap?
- Only the pages you want in search: the final https address of each, no redirects, no pages blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex, and no duplicates.
- Why are there no priority or changefreq tags?
- Google ignores both. It uses lastmod if the date is accurate, so only add it when your pages really changed.
- How do I submit it to Google?
- Upload sitemap.xml to your site's main folder, so it opens at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Then in Google Search Console go to Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml and submit. Add the Sitemap line to robots.txt too.
- Pages in the sitemap but still not in Google?
- Our fixed-price website check looks at indexing, speed, mobile layout and the other reasons pages get left out.
