Why it matters

Tax is easy to get wrong backwards.

Adding tax is one multiplication. Taking it out of a price that already includes it is where most mistakes happen: 18% of the total is not the tax. Line-by-line rounding and the right split for India keep your invoice matching your return.

How do I add GST or VAT to a price?
Multiply the price before tax by the rate. 1,000 plus 18% GST is 1,000 × 0.18 = 180 of tax, so 1,180 in total.
How do I remove GST or VAT from a price?
Divide the price that includes tax by 1 plus the rate. 1,180 including 18% GST is 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000 before tax, so the tax is 180. Do not just take 18% off the total; that gives the wrong answer.
What are the GST rates in India now?
Since 22 September 2025 the main GST slabs are 5% and 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods, and 0% for exempt items. The old 12% and 28% slabs were folded into these.
When do I charge CGST + SGST and when IGST?
For a sale inside the same state, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST (18% = 9% + 9%). For a sale to another state it is charged as IGST at the full rate.
What is the VAT rate in the UK?
The standard rate is 20%. A 5% reduced rate applies to things like home energy and child car seats, and many foods, books and children’s clothes are 0%.
