Google's Universal Cart Is Live Before Black Friday. What a Small Online Shop Should Check.

For the first holiday season, part of the shopping happens in Google's cart instead of yours. Your product data decides whether you are in it, and your analytics may not see all of it.

On 15 October Google launched Universal Cart in the United States, across Google Search (including AI Mode) and the Gemini app. A shopper can save products from different retailers into one cart, and Google keeps it across its services.

Black Friday is 27 November and Cyber Monday 30 November. This is the first holiday season with Universal Cart switched on, and the way it works changes a few things for small online shops.

What the cart does

  • Watches prices and stock. It tracks price drops and restocks across the shopper's list, using Google's Shopping Graph, which Google says holds more than 60 billion product listings.
  • Suggests savings. It shows relevant promo codes and, because it is built on Google Wallet, recommends which of the shopper's cards to pay with.
  • Checks out in one of two ways. For some merchants the shopper pays with Google Pay inside Google. Otherwise the items are transferred into the merchant's own cart to finish on the merchant's site.

Either way, Google says the merchant stays the seller of record: you send the order confirmation, handle support and returns, and own the customer relationship. Launch merchants include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and "many Shopify merchants".

How a store gets in

The cart runs on Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). According to Search Engine Journal's reading of Google's documentation, merchants who meet Google's onboarding requirements choose native checkout or cart transfer in a UCP integration hub in Merchant Center, which is rolling out gradually in the US. Canada and Australia are due next year. Google's own launch post does not list the eligibility rules.

If you sell on Shopify, you may already be in. Shopify's help page says "Direct Checkout is enabled by default for eligible U.S. Shopify Stores." The setting is under Sales channels → Agentic in the Shopify admin.

Six checks before 27 November

  1. Make your product data honest and current. The cart alerts shoppers to price drops and restocks from your listings. A sale price that is on your site but not in your Merchant Center feed, or stock shown as available when it is not, is now visible to the shopper inside Google before they reach you.
  2. Shopify stores: open Sales channels → Agentic. Decide deliberately whether Direct Checkout stays on. If it does, test an order end to end before the busy week, including confirmation email, shipping and refund.
  3. Expect a gap in your analytics. Search Engine Journal reports that Google Analytics and Shopify custom pixels "will not fire" for Direct Checkout purchases. Sales will look lower in analytics than in your store's order list. Decide now which number you will trust, and do not cut an ad campaign because a dashboard missed orders.
  4. Use Merchant Center's own reporting. Google's UCP Analytics Reporting dashboard counts buy clicks, purchases and cancellations, and cart transfers separately. Note what it shows before Black Friday so you have a baseline.
  5. Check what transferred carts look like. In the first release a transfer is one-way: it creates a pre-filled cart on your site, and later changes in Google do not sync. Make sure your cart page handles a shopper arriving with items already in it.
  6. Be ready for support you did not see coming. If a shopper paid inside Google, they still contact you about delivery and returns. Make sure your team can find those orders and knows where they came from.

The bigger shift

In October we wrote about AI answers taking clicks from websites and Google surfacing official sites in AI answers. Universal Cart is the shopping version of the same change: more of the decision happens on Google's page, and the store is chosen by how complete and accurate its data is. For a small shop that is not all bad news. A well-kept feed can now put you in the same cart as Walmart and Target.
